Abstract:

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works. At CERN, the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter — the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws of Nature.

Description:

Functions:

As physicist or engineer in the Performance Evaluation Section (PE) of the MPE group you will :

* Analyse data from LHC beam and magnet operation to understand the performance of the protection systems;

* Participate to the activities for increasing the LHC energy and beam intensity, related to the magnet powering and protection systems;

* In collaboration with colleagues from other teams, provide specifications, implementations and performance assessments of protection systems;

* Provide support and guidance to hardware designers of the protection systems;

* Participate in the first-line operational support to the LHC protection system; this will require a good understanding of the LHC operation and its protection systems, frequent work in the field, daily follow-up of the operational performance of the components of the LHC machine protection systems and close interactions with teams involved in operations;

* Supervise and coach students, fellows or project associates;

* Contribute to the understanding of beam induced equipment damage, including participation to experiments;

* Contribute actively to the establishment of quality assurance and improvement of the dependability of protection systems and controls
