Progress in molecular systematic is often hampered by methodological limitations of the methods of phylogeny reconstruction available.

Description:

Especially challenging is a placement of out-group within ingroup characterized by rapid-star-radiation. Many crucial issues which were given much attention in the literature, are, in fact, examples of this problem. To name some of them: bryophyte mono- vs. paraphyly, position of Gnetales within the gymnosperms, pinpointing of immediate ancestors of the land plants within Streptophyta, basal angiosperm phylogeny.

In the last years certain methodological basis was laid which would allow tackling these problems more effectively.
