Description:
VTT is launching second international graduate school in 2011 to attract new, PhD students. We are looking for 15 new PhD students (incl. one Post Doc Researcher) that are expected to contribute to development of our prominent technological competences.
The employment of Post Doc Researchers is for two years. The open positions are related to applied materials, services and the built environment, industrial systems and management, bio and chemical processes, energy, information and communication technologies, and microtechnologies and electronics.
PhD Student - Pedagogical aspects on mobile and contextual language learning
At VTT, our mobile learning projects aim at learning solutions in which the social aspects and the everyday life contexts where the learning can be encouraged are taken into account. More frequent and divided training will be supported by recognizing suitable learning situations by a context-aware application that triggers mobile tasks for the learner. We have excellent possibilities to combine different technologies and capabilities to utilize user-centric design in the development of new services. To complement our expertise, we are seeking for a PhD student with a background in learning sciences.
The PhD work would be linked to the development of learning environment, in which we aim at combining technological knowledge and user-centric approach. We will be combining physical and virtual learning spaces, services utilizing social networks for learning purposes and context awareness in mobile applications. We aim at mobile learning services that would be applicable for several focus groups and different learning styles. As a member of our research group, the PhD student would be involved in the service development process.
Research questions related to the PhD work include:
How does collaborative and informal learning support the learning process?
How do created applications support different learning styles and needs?
What are the elements needed in an evaluation model for assessing learning outcomes in mobile technology assisted learning?
Success in this position requires a background in one or several of the following fields:
• Mobile and contextual learning
• Pedagogy
• Interest in media technology applications
PhD students and Post Doc Researcher participate in high level research work at VTT on selected strategically relevant topics within a collaborative project environment. PhD work is done for four consecutive years under professional scientific supervision by highly experienced and competent senior researchers with PhD degrees.
