Ph D. Fellowship: Ecotoxicology
Organization: The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB)
Location: Aas, Norway
Field: Chemistry
Requirements:
Qualifications
The chosen candidate will have an MSc in either Environmental Chemistry or Ecotoxicology. This should include practical experience in carrying out experimental laboratory ecotoxicological studies, such as toxicity or bioavailability tests in aquatic organisms. One of the tools to be employed is radiotracer techniques, so it is an advantage if the chosen candidate is authorized to work with radioactive isotopes.
The successful applicant must commit him-/herself to undertake a Ph.D programme aiming at a dissertation within the 3 year period. The position may be extended to 4 years depending on capacity to do teaching or other commitments for the department.
Gender aspect
UMB wants to recruit more females to science. If two or more applicants are considered to be equally qualified for the position, and at least one of them is a female, the female applicant will be offered the position.
Abstract:
At the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (IPM) there is a 3 years position open for a MSc candidate to complete a PhD degree in Environmental Sciences within a project entitled "Ecotoxicology of Engineered Nanoparticles: Linking uptake and response to chemical characterization", starting 1st May 2011.
Description:
IPM retains approximately 170 employees, including senior scientists, postdocs, PhD students, technical and administrative staff. The department is organized into the following scientific groups: Environmental chemistry, Hydrology and limnology, Geology, Agroecology, Soil sciences, Plant protection - plant health, Genetics and plant biology, Food plants, and Urban horticulture and urban greening.
IPM has an active research environment on ecotoxicology and all areas of environmental chemistry and risk assessment, including studies on heavy metals, radionuclides and nanoparticles, and supported by the research in the disciplines of limnology, soil sciences, and sustainable technology. IPM has at the moment approximately 400 students and 65 PhD students and comprehensive research activities nationally and internationally. More details can be found at www.umb.no/ipm
Project
The PhD project will be linked to ongoing research at UMB and Bioforsk on the environmental and ecotoxicological effects of nanoparticles. The successful candidate will be part of an established team of scientists and students working within the Research School on Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, in collaboration with several national and international partners.
Project description / Obligations
Research Area and Hypothesis
The proposed PhD stipend will focus on investigating and comparing the aquatic toxicology of two contrasting engineered nanoparticles: silver (Ag) and near zerovalent iron (nZVI). Both these nanoparticles have industrial applications, and both have chemical properties that make them highly susceptible to environmental modification and the potential to induce toxic effects.
Salary
The starting salary is level 48 on the Norwegian government salary scale level 48 (approx NOK 383.900 or ? 48,000 per year). Increase in salary will be according to seniority rights.
