PostDoc: discrete mechanics and optimal control

Organization: Technische Universitaet Muenchen

Location: Muenchen, Germany

Field: Computational mathematics

Requirements:

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Optimisation or Control and must have a significant publications record. Applications should include a cover letter, CV, publications list, contact details for three professional referees

Abstract:

Applications are invited for a Marie Curie post-doctoral fellowship within the ITN Marie Curie network SADCO to perform research on discrete mechanics and optimal control

Description:

Recently, a new numerical approach ("DMOC") to the solution of optimal control problems for mechanical systems has been proposed which is based on a direct discretization of the Lagrange-d'Alembert principle (instead of discretzing the equations of motion). This approach yields a finite-difference type discretization of the dynamical constraints of the problem on configuration space only which by construction preserves important structural properties of the system, like the evolution of the momentum maps associated to the symmetries of the Lagrangian or the energy behaviour

In this project, the aim is to extend the DMOC approach to nonsmooth solutions, to develop adaptive discretizations and higher order schemes.

The funds for this post are available up to 18 months. The researcher will also benefit from a wide ranging training program that will take advantage of both local and the SADCO wide activities, as well as of schools, conferences, and workshops.

Advisor: Oliver Junge

Salary will be in accordance with the EC Marie Curie Fellowship scale. Under EC rules for training networks, candidates should have no more than five years of postgraduate research experience (inclusive of any PhD training). Candidates must also not have resided or carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to appointment. Please state clearly in your cover letter how your candidacy fulfils these two criteria.
