Requirements:
•Masters degree (or equivalent) in law, social sciences, and/or relevant humanities, with demonstrated knowledge of public international law. Previous research or working experience in this area is an asset;
•Excellent writing and presentation skills in English;
•Demonstrated research skills, including - if applicable - qualitative and/or quantitative research;
•Openness towards interdisciplinary research methods and approaches;
•Willingness to assist with undergraduate and LLM teaching. Previous teaching experience is an asset;
•Willingness to support the administrative, teaching, and research activities of the Grotius Centre in a collegial way.
The PhD candidates will be affiliated with the Research Programme 'Securing the Rule of Law in a World of Multilevel Jurisdiction' Of Leiden Law School. They will work in The Hague and/or Leiden
Abstract:
The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies (Leiden Law School & Campus Den Haag) is a leading academic institution in the field of international law, which focuses on high-level research, education and training in public international law and international justice.
Description:
The theme Interaction between Legal Systems has been selected as the research profile area for the Leiden Law School. It includes a range of research projects carried out in various departments of the Law School. It forms part of Leiden University's research profile in Crossing Borders in Fundamental Research.
Applicants are invited to submit research proposals (max. 1800 words) on topics related to the Interaction between Legal Systems. Proposals are not restricted to any particular area of public international law. They may, inter alia, relate to global challenges, such as peace, justice and development; climate change and human rights; global justice or international security; transnational economic actors and human rights; convergence between public and private international law.
Proposals will be assessed in light of scientific/scholarly quality (e.g., originality and/or innovative elements), approach and relevance to the profile area and focus of the Grotius Centre.
PhD Tasks
- To engage in supervised scientific research that will ultimately result in a doctoral thesis;
- To carry out a systematic review of scholarly and policy material related to the PhD topic;
- To submit research output for publication in peer-reviewed international academic journals;
- To participate in the educational, research related and administrative activities of the Grotius Centre, including the LL.M. (adv.) programme in Public International Law.
Appointment
Successful applicants will be appointed for a fixed-term period of 4 years. Continuation after the first year is dependent upon an evaluation. The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the Collective Agreement of Dutch Universities for academic personnel, and will range from € 2.042,- per month in the first year, gradually rising to € 2.612,- in the final year.
