Description:

Bioversity International is the world’s largest organization researching agricultural biodiversity. We strongly believe that agricultural biodiversity can provide key contributions to solutions for global issues related to food security, poverty, climate change, and environmental degradation. We undertake, encourage and support research and other activities aimed at improving the well-being of present and future generations of people, by enhancing conservation and the deployment of agricultural biodiversity on farms and in forests, with special emphasis on the needs of developing countries. The organization is active in over 100 countries worldwide, and has more than 350 staff working from some 18 country offices. It is one of 15 centres supported by the Consortium of the International Agricultural Research Centres (CGIAR). Bioversity International is now seeking:

Project Coordinator
(3-year International Consultancy)

The project includes Cameroon, Gabon and Congo DRC and aims to generate innovative approaches to forest management in the Congo Basin by increasing multi-functionality (integrating timber and non-timber forest products) to maintain ecosystem integrity and sustain the livelihoods of forest-dependent people. Special attention will be paid to forest species that are critical to local communities for food, medicine or income, in order to minimize the impacts of logging and overexploitation on these important resources. Operational guidelines to incorporate local knowledge and integrate the management of timber and non-timber forest resources will be developed and validated in selected sites in Cameroon, Gabon and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Participation of local communities, forest concession holders, civil society and governmental forest management agencies will be key to ensuring the uptake of results and the effective transformation of the forestry sector in the region.

Based in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and reporting to the Global Coordinator, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Forest and Other Wild Plant Resources, the consultant will be responsible for:
• overseeing the day-to-day activities of the “Beyond Timber” project,
• establishing and maintaining contact with national partners, concessionaires, and other research participants,
• participating in identification of research sites,
• overseeing implementation, timing and expenses for research components,
• guiding activities at technical and practical levels,
• ensuring that partners produce financial and technical reports when required, and submitting a draft consolidated donor report to the Grant Manager,
• participating in development and publication of recommendations and guidelines.

More specifically, the coordinator will:
• participate in the development of project components beginning with the inception workshop,
• participate in developing detailed methods for the research activities at each stage,
• participate in hiring an assistant and will supervise the assistant,
• develop and maintain a geo-referenced database for selected tree species including uses, threats, ecological characteristics
