Abstract:

As a PhD Student you will help identify mechanisms of change associated with successful depression prevention.

Description:

As a PhD Student you will help identify mechanisms of change associated with successful depression prevention. One of the most widely researched prevention programmes for depressive symptoms in adolescence is the Penn Resiliency Programme. Despite evidence from several randomized controlled trials (RCT) documenting the general effectiveness of the programme, there are still differences in outcomes, and not all vulnerable adolescents benefit. It is not yet clear why some adolescents fail to benefit from the programme as the causal mechanisms of change still need to be unravelled. The main focus of this PhD project will be to identify mechanisms of change associated with successful depression prevention outcomes for young adolescents in high-risk neighborhoods in the Netherlands. Specifically, there are three objectives: (1) to identify key emotion-regulation strategies that mediate prevention outcomes, (2) to assess these emotion-regulation strategies in the context of peer interactions (by videotaping teens interacting with one another over the course of the programme) and (3) to identify the barriers that adolescents encounter in learning key emotion-regulation strategies that could help them prevent developing depressive symptoms.
