2 Postdoc Contracts Magnetism

Organization: INSTITUTO DE ASTROFISICA DE CANARIAS (IAC)

Location: La Laguna (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), Spain

Field: Astrophysics

Requirements:

Preference will be given to candidates with experience on the following topics: Numerical modeling of non-LTE radiative transfer in realistic models of stellar atmospheres, including the physical mechanisms that produce polarization in spectral lines (atomic level polarization and the Hanle and Zeeman effects); the quantum theory of spectral line polarization and its application to explore the magnetic sensitivity of chromospheric and coronal lines. Applicants must be in possession of a PhD degree in Astrophysics or Physics at the time of appointment (the date of defense of the doctoral thesis must be after 1st January 2006).

Abstract:

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias; IAC (Tenerife, Spain), invites applicants for TWO postdoctoral contracts within the framework of the external project entitled: "Solar Magnetism and Astrophysical Spectropolarimetry" (AYA2010-18029), financed by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and whose responsible scientist is Prof. Javier Trujillo Bueno. The appointed candidate will benefit from the research environment at the IAC, which hosts one of the largest and most active Solar Physics groups in Europe. The group covers theory (polarized radiative transfer and MHD), observation and instrumental development. In addition, the IAC coordinates the design phase of the "European Solar Telescope" (which involves the joint effort of several European countries) and the “Solar Atmospheric and Interplanetary Research (SOLAIRE) Network” (whose explicit aim is to foster research collaboration among its participant institutions).

Description:

The selected postdoc will also benefit from scientific exchange with the other research groups of the IAC, whose interests include cosmology, galaxies, the interstellar medium, stellar physics, exoplanets, telescope design and space projects. Further information about the IAC's research programme, its observatories and the 10.4 m GTC telescope is available on the IAC's Web page (http://www.iac.es/).

Duties: The selected candidate will carry out his/her research in the following fields: The generation and transfer of polarized radiation, with emphasis on the Hanle and Zeeman effects in chromospheric spectral lines; development and application of plasma diagnostic tools for the determination of chromospheric and coronal magnetic fields.
The gross annual salary is 32,886 €, subject to up to 20% tax and Social Security deductions. There are two positions, of 12 months and 6 months of duration.
Compulsory documentation to submit:
* The Application Form: WORD or PDF ;
* Curriculum Vitae, bibliography, brief statement of research interests, and a covering letter telling us about the skills you can bring to the job;
* A photocopy of your PhD Degree or certificate;
* At least two letters of recommendation must be sent (electronic submission);

For any scientific additional information, please contact the PI of the project; Prof. Javier Trujillo Bueno (jtb at iac.es)..
