Description:

The infectious history of a renal transplant candidate strongly influences his innate and adaptive immune responsiveness to allo-antigens. A better understanding of the interplay between viral pathogens and the allo-immune response will therefore improve the results of  renal transplantation. Highlights of the current project are:

  • Characterization of the interplay between antiviral (e.g. CMV) and allo-immune immune responses in the allograft, as reflected in tissue pathology and urinary composition
  • Identification of urinary markers that can be used for non-invasive monitoring of virally induced innate and adaptive immune responses in the renal graft
  • Discovery of novel urinary biomarkers of graft injury upon viral (CMV and BKV) infection
  • Application of a wide range of approaches & techniques, with emphasis on proteomics, to answer the research questions
  • Strong collaboration with partners within the research consortium, in Nijmegen,  Amsterdam and Leiden and publication of research in scientific journals and presentation at scientific meetings
