Requirements:
The successful applicant should have a first class or good upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in French or European studies, politics, history, or other relevant subject area. They should have, or be near to completing, a postgraduate qualification such as a Masters or equivalent.

The French Academic Subject Group, as part of the School of Languages and Social Sciences, invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship from strong candidates in research areas covered by the School. The studentship is linked to the recent appointment of a Chair in French Politics and Modern History and will be for full-time study over three years, commencing in October 2011.

The French Academic Subject Group, as part of the School of Languages and Social Sciences, invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship from strong candidates in research areas covered by the School. The studentship is linked to the recent appointment of a Chair in French Politics and Modern History and will be for full-time study over three years, commencing in October 2011.
Applications are particularly invited from candidates wishing to pursue research in the following fields: modern French history and politics, political institutions, parties and elections, political culture, discourse and ideology, or a comparative project focusing on France and another European country or other countries covered by the Aston Centre for Europe.
The French Subject Group has an internationally recognised research profile spanning French history, politics, culture and other areas of French and francophone studies. Details of the Group's activities and research areas can be found here.
1 October 2011 start date with completion date of 30 September 2014
Financial Support
Will be provided to the successful applicant to cover the Home/EU fees rate (estimated to be £3,480 in academic year 2011/12) plus a maintenance grant at the standard AHRC and ESRC rate (currently £13,590) with the corresponding standard increases in subsequent years. Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the ‘Home/EU' and the ‘Overseas' tuition fees (estimated to be £7,320 in academic year 2011/12)
