Unix Administrator for Scientific Research

Requirements:
1. BS or MS degree in science or engineering, and at least 6 (BS) or 3 (MS) years of Unix and Linux experience.
2. Some experience managing or collaborating with technical staff and/or exposure to scientific computing or datacenters.
3. Fluent in spoken and written English and knowledge of Japanese recommended.
4. experience in high-performance research computing and in-depth understanding of the following: Unix and Linux architecture, queuing systems and schedulers;
networking infrastructure issues and storage solutions related to HPC; system tuning, and data backup and security issues.
5. Other desirable skills include familiarity with grid computing; application software configuration; compilers; parallel libraries; knowledge of high-level scripting languages such as Python and Perl; knowledge of web server technology; proficiency in project planning and project management; ability to work independently as well as collaborate with end users and other system administrators

Description:
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is an Independent Administrative Institution established by the Government of Japan. Its aim is to establish a world‐class university of science and technology in Okinawa. English will be the language of instruction and a large segment of the faculty and student population will be international. Currently, 27 Principal Investigators and a total of more than 200 scientists, students, and research support staff are located in OIST facilities in Uruma and Onna, Okinawa. We seek an experienced unix administrator for Scientific Research to provide technical leadership and oversight of computer systems in support of scientific research activity.
Responsibilities:
This position will require providing system administration for several unix servers and technical support to faculty, students and research staff at OIST who wish to use high
performance computers.
In particular, duties will involve:
1. installing, configuring and maintaining new software on servers of various architectures and operating systems.
2. life cycle management of high-performance computing (HPC) research infrastructure;
3. programming and systems analysis tasks, testing and benchmarking
Other duties will involve:
1. Webserver maintenance and configuration
2. Mail server maintenance and configuration
3. Network maintenance and configuration
4. Maintenance and configuration of SSH / VPN gateways.
5. Interfacing HPC systems to LDAP-based centralized authentication system.
6. Centralized data storage and backup
7. Support of scientific software on desktop/laptop computers.
8. Setup and support for special IT infrastructure during workshops/schools/seminars etc.
Term:
Full time, 2 years contract initially with 1 month probationary period
This contract may be renewed
This position has a potential for permanent employment
Compensation:
In accordance with the OIST Employee Compensation Regulation
