Abstract:

The Department of the History of Art and Architecture/Triarc (Trinity Irish Art Research Centre) wishes to employ a Research Assistant to work on a project, entitled Bacons Books: Francis Bacon’s library and its role in his art. This joint project, in partnership with Dublin City Gallery/the Hugh Lane (DCGHL), is funded by the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS). As an interdisciplinary project, it involves engagement with colleagues in other disciplines, most notably the Department of English in Trinity College. This post will be tenable from March 2011.

Description:

A Research Assistant will be required to undertake the following tasks:
• Identify key words and themes among the texts in the Francis Bacon book collection
• Input a specified range of information to the database including tagging by defined key words
• Identify and scan/photograph relevant pages according to defined characteristics
• Identify and note evidence of usage, and missing pages from texts
• Identify and perform searches under headings to be defined/agreed with the PI
• Identify and research an aspect of the book collection and its relationship with Francis Bacon’s art, and prepare a publishable research paper for presentation at the symposium
• Assist in the conception and administration of the symposium
• Assist generally in the administration and implementation of the project, as required

The post is based at the Dublin City Gallery/the Hugh Lane, Dublin, and at the Provost’s House Stables, Trinity College Dublin. Some work outside office hours may be necessary but time off in lieu will be given

The project recognises that an artist’s library is a significant resource for the analysis and understanding of visual texts. The aim of the project is to digitally catalogue, to a searchable database, the collection of c.1,000 texts owned by Francis Bacon at his death, subsequently donated to the DCGHL. The completion of a comprehensive catalogue will provide the basis for exploring the relationship between the texts and Bacon’s images, and an abridged version will be made accessible online via websites at both the College and the Gallery. The project includes hosting a symposium in order to present aspects of the findings.
