PhD Positions in Solar Energy Conversion
Organization: UCD School of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, UCD Dublin and in Materials and Surface Science Institute at the University of Limerick
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Abstract:
Postgraduate positions are now available in the UCD School of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, UCD Dublin and in Materials and Surface Science Institute at the University of Limerick. These 3-year positions offer a superb opportunity to work and exchange idea with students and staff in a global-leading Solar Energy Conversion Strategic Research Cluster.
Description:
PhD 1: Hydrogen Release Catalysis (UCD Dublin, Ireland)
The emerging field of hydrogen storage offers an unprecedented opportunity to perform research critical to solving society's demands for energy. You should be motivated and organized student willing to engage in inorganic synthetic chemistry. The project involves the preparation and characterization of air and moisture sensitive complexes. Moreover, assembling and testing gas measuring equipment is also part of the project. It is not necessary to have prior skills in this area, but you should have a solid background in inorganic chemistry with a good overall grade in chemistry [BSc (2:1 or 1H) or MSc]. Good interpersonal and communication skills in English are also required. Applications (CV with the address of at least one reference) and inquires should be directed towards Dr. Andrew D. Phillips (andrew.phillips@ucd.ie)
PhD 2: Hetrogenization and reversible Hydrogen Release Catalysis (UCD Dublin, Ireland)
In tandem with the work on hydrogen release above, this project will involve nano-composite material synthesis (using inorganic chemistry techniques), characterisation and application (as H2 release and H2 capture mediating agents). Experience in the design and application of heterogeneous catalysts under continuous flow and batch reactor conditions would be desirable. The candidate will require a BSc (2:1 or 1H) or MSc in Chemistry / Chemical Engineering or a related discipline that has a strong interest in sustainable energy. Good interpersonal and communication skills in English are also required.
Applications (CV with the address of at least one reference) and inquires should be directed towards Dr. James A. Sullivan (james.sullivan@ucd.ie)
PhD 3: Development of Solar Cells devices comprising of Perpendicularly Aligned Semiconductor Nanorods (MSSI, Univeristy of Limerick, Ireland)
The PhD position will be primarily focused upon the creation of state of the art aligned nanorod solar cells, where each nanorod is a discretely functioning photovoltaic component, collectively contributing to the overall power output of the device. The successful candidate will concentrate on the solution synthesis and device integration of perpendicularly aligned II-VI semiconductor nanorods.
We welcome applications from talented candidates with strong motivation and experimental skills. Good interpersonal and communication skills in English are also required.
Please email a CV with the address of at least one reference to Dr. Kevin M. Ryan (Kevin.M.Ryan@ul.ie).
The annual stipend is €18,000 and €5,500 for fees.
Deadline: 18-02-2011
