PhD in accelerator physics or any other relevant physics topic.
Experience and knowledge
* Relevant, proven experience in accelerator physics, including in the specification and design of components for accelerators.
* Expertise in the use of accelerator design codes such as MADX is essential.
* A working knowledge of, and experience in, injection, extraction or transfer line system design would be an advantage.
* Ability to communicate efficiently within an international and multidisciplinary team and to supervise technicians.
* Ability and aptitude for driving the evaluation, proposal and introduction of new concepts and techniques for beam transfer related processes and hardware in the CERN environment, including establishing and maintaining links with other laboratories, universities and industry.
* Capacity to work independently on the basis of general instructions and to establish and maintain good working relations with other specialists and users.
* Good knowledge of English or French; basic knowledge of the other language or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.
Abstract:
The Accelerator Beam Transfer (ABT) Group of the Technology Department (TE) is responsible for the injection and extraction systems and beam transfer lines of the CERN accelerator complex, including the beam dumping system of the LHC. The ABT group conceives, designs, constructs, commissions, and maintains the associated injection and extraction hardware systems, and also is responsible for related consolidation and upgrade activities.

Functions
You will strengthen the existing small team of accelerator physicists in the Beam Transfer Physics section responsible for conceptual design studies of beam transfer systems for existing and proposed accelerators, and for the commissioning, machine studies and operational follow-up of existing systems.
In particular, you will:
* Take an active role in the preparation , execution and analysis of commissioning and performance optimisation of the beam transfer systems of the LHC, including beam injection, beam dumping and the associated transfer lines.
* Carry out design studies for:
* The upgrade of the LHC injector chain, including the injection, extraction and transfer line systems for the PSB, PS and SPS;
* Beam transfer aspects of the various LHC upgrade projects and studies, especially for the LHC luminosity and energy upgrade.
* Undertake feasibility studies on injection, extraction and transfer lines for future accelerators and facilities as and when they are received from various projects.
