Abstract:
Applications are welcome for a three-year fully funded full-time studentship to work in the area of Romano-British archaeology.
Description:
Applications are welcome for a three-year fully funded full-time studentship to work in the area of Romano-British archaeology. The studentship will focus on the topic of understanding the relationship between the Iron Age British and Romans through their material culture in the northwest of England, and the West Midlands. This is an opportunity for the candidate to expand the archaeological knowledge and understanding of an area (the northwest of England), which has lagged behind much of developer led research elsewhere in England and Scotland.
The research involves the collating and analysis of the material culture of Roman period Cumbria and Lancashire, from the perspective of both local and intrusive groups, i.e. ‘native' and Roman/Romano-British' inhabitants. This will involve the re-interpretation of the role of material culture in relation to the processes involved in occupying the northern part of Roman Britain. The candidate will engage directly with the material culture of both the northwest and west of Britain (Cumbria, Lancashire, Worcester, Herefordshire and Wales) including unpublished site reports, museum collections and published reports from the portable antiquities scheme, as well as the published and grey literature.
The student will carry out a research project that is expected to lead to the award of a higher research degree (PhD). The student will engage, develop and conduct an individual research study within the topic area under the direction of Dr. Helen L. Lone.
