Organization: KNMI (The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute)
Location: De Bilt, Netherlands
Field: Physics
Requirements:
We are searching for candidates who have (or will soon obtain) a doctoral degree in atmospheric chemistry, air quality modelling, data assimilation, or a closely related discipline. An excellent research record and passion for science are requirements. Programming skills on Linux and the programming language Fortran 90/95 is desirable.

Description:
The research aims to improve the monitoring and forecasting of air pollution. The candidate will work on the development of the regional air quality model LOTOS- EUROS and the assimilation of surface and satellite measurements of air pollution. The successful applicant will closely collaborate with Dr. Henk Eskes at KNMI on the following tasks: Coupling of the regional air quality model to the new high-resolution weather forecast model HARMONIE. This work is financed by the NMDC (Nationaal Modellen- en Datacentrum; http://www.nmdc.eu/ ). Development of a statistical post-processing to improve the forecast scores of the air quality model (NMDC). From 2012 onwards: Develop the air quality model as contribution to the MACC ensemble. Further development of the assimilation of surface and satellite measurements in the context of MACC.
In first instance the candidate will work on the first two tasks for a period of one year. If successful, the position can be extended in the framework of the MACC project with a maximum duration of five years. The candidate should start as soon as possible.
