Organization: Systems Biology Centre for Energy Metabolism and Ageing

Location: Groningen, Netherlands

Field: Biological Sciences

Requirements:

We are searching for an excellent, highly motivated candidate with an affinity to experimental as well as theoretical aspects of the project and an MSc degree in a relevant discipline (systems biology, computational biology, biochemistry, molecular physiology, etc.). The candidate is expected to communicate efficiently with an interdisciplinary team of colleagues in SBC-EMA.

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. This means that you must have built up sufficient protection against Hepatitis B before you can be appointed

Description:

The candidate will do PhD research on the above topic. In view of the current composition of the research team, he/she is expected to fulfill a bridging position between theoreticians and experimentalist; however an excellent candidate in either of the two will be considered seriously. The candidate will collaborate with colleagues in SBC-EMA, sharing Systems Biology expertise to unravel the general principles of metabolism and ageing.

- The UMCG offers a salary of minimally € 2086 gross per month in the first year, rising to a maximum of € 2673 in the fourth year.
- The appointment will be to a temporary position for four years on a full-time basis (36 hours/week).
- The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC

Project description
A universal relation exists in nature between metabolic rate and ageing. In organisms ranging from yeast to humans, caloric restriction tends to delay the decline of vital functions and increase life span. In the Centre for Systems Biology of Metabolism and Ageing (SBC-EMA) an interdisciplinary team of scientists, ranging from mathematicians to biologists, seeks to unravel the general mechanisms that underlie this relation between metabolism and ageing.

The PhD project will focus on the age-related decline of metabolic functions (e.g. glucose homeostasis, metabolic flexibility) in mammals, notably in mice as a model organism. We will employ a broad range of experimental tools as well as computational modelling to investigate energy metabolism during ageing at the level of cells, organs and the whole body. Our ambition is to couple the dynamics of energy metabolism at the cell/organ level to that of the whole body (multiscale modelling).
