Post-doctoral position in Materials Physics

Organization: KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Location: Stockholm, Sweden

Field: Materials technology

Abstract:

The Nano-silicon group is part of the Materials Physics unit of the School of Information and Communication Technology in Kista. We use the Electrum clean room and the electron-beam facility at central campus to fabricate silicon structures at the nano scale such as: Si quantum dots, nanowires, nanopores, micropores etc. For a new, relatively large cross-disciplinary collaborative project we have a post-doctor position opening:

Description:

The successful applicant is expected to participate in a project named “Multi-functional pore arrays in silicon” funded by the Foundation for Strategic Research. Arrays of micro- or nano-pores in silicon have many uses and within this project we are developing 1) Structured scintillators for X-ray imaging and 2) Solid state nano-pores for DNA-sequencing. In the first project an array of deeply etched pores in silicon is filled with a scintillating material. These filled pores will guide the light emitted from absorption of X-ray quanta towards the pixels of a CCD-camera. In the second project we are developing thin membranes where ultra-narrow holes (diameter of a few nm) will be used for a new method of parallel DNA sequencing. For these projects we will develop electro-chemical etching as a tool for state-of-the-art nano-fabrication of high-aspect ratio pore arrays. The position will be focused on building up and optimising this process with a new etching system. The successful applicant will also be involved in other ongoing research projects in the “nano-silicon” group, such as quantum dots, nanowires etc.
