Abstract:

This project is for a PhD position for four years and is funded by the Dublin Institute of Technology Fiosraigh Scholarship Programme in partnership with Board Gais

Description:

11,000 Irish Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) make up less than 2% of Irish gas consumers but account for approximately 35% of gas consumption. However, relatively few greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions mitigation policies have been targeted at this sector due to lack of information on potential energy savings. This deficit can now be addressed by smart-metering data which is currently becoming available to Bord Gáis Networks (BGN). The Dublin Energy Lab (DEL) will leverage existing electrical smart metering research experience to:

develop models to accurately forecast short-term SME gas consumption to allow BGN to more accurately purchase bulk gas supplies for the national network, thus resulting in savings and increasing competitiveness;
develop representative models of long-term heat consumption at a business level and investigate the cost-effectiveness of efficient and renewable technologies for the smart-metered sample; and
extend these findings to all customers to identify the potential for GHG emissions mitigation so as to inform policymaking.
The project will employ unique data available to BGN and develop DIT's strategic relationship with this company. Outputs will include international peer-reviewed publications, reports, policy papers and two symposia in the areas of: demand forecasting; and emissions mitigation

The award is funded under the DIT Fiosraigh Enterprise Scheme in partnership with Board Gais and includes a student stipend of €16,000 per annum for four years and all registration fees covered for the duration of the scholarship
