Research fellow (PhD candidate) in the field of petroleum geoscience

Organization: University of Bergen

Location: Bergen, Norway

Requirements:

Applicants must have achieved a master’s degree or equivalent in earth science that is relevant to the PhD topic, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment can be made.

Candidates should have a background and research interest in basin evolution and the related tectono-sedimentary and stratigraphic processes and should have experience of modern subsurface interpretation techniques involving integrated 3D seismic and well datasets. Experience of salt tectonics, rift tectonics or the interaction of turbidites and topography would be an advantage. All applicants are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills (in English). Practical skills in seismic and well log interpretation (Landmark or Petrel) are also considered advantageous.

Abstract:

At the Department of Earth Science a 3-year position as research fellow (PhD candidate) is available immediately in the field of petroleum geoscience. The research will focus on Late Jurassic depositional systems response to salt-influenced rifting in the Norwegian Central Graben, North Sea and is in collaboration with Total E&P Norge AS.

Description:

In this project, a tectono-sedimentary approach will be adopted, integrating detailed structural analysis of the growth of late Jurassic faults and salt structures in the Norwegian Central Graben with the sedimentology of late Jurassic shallow and deep marine depositional systems. The study will be based on the integrated analysis of 3D seismic, wireline, core and biostratigraphic data, supplemented by modelling or field analogue studies.

The research fellow must take part in the University's approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in collaboration with the supervisory committee. The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as research fellow.
