PHD open position at CEMEF: How do Annealing Twins form?
Organization: MINES ParisTech - CEMEF
Location: Valbonne - Sophia Antipolis, France
Field: Materials Engineering
Abstract:
CEMEF studies the materials processings in all their aspects: physics, chemical physics, thermal and mechanical analysis and numerical modelling. Researches are on a large range of materials: metals, synthetic and bio polymers, food stuff, composites and nanocomposites, glass, ceramics…
Description:
The focus of the investigation will be on the mechanisms of annealing twin formation that enable Grain Boundary Engineering (GBE) of materials to be accomplished. GBE is being applied increasingly as a process that seeks to improve properties such as corrosion resistance and fatigue life through control of the grain boundary network.
The thesis will aim at identifying the annealing twinning mechanisms in FCC metals and alloys (pure Nickel, 304L austenitic steel and γ-γ' Ni-base superalloy). This PhD work will include
* an experimental part to get accurate data on grain boundary networks as a function of the thermomechanical processing parameters,
* building of physical models for twin formation associated to grain boundary motion, and for the influence secondary phase particles on annealing twinning mechanisms
* performing numerical simulations of the observed phenomena.
