Requirements:
PhD or equivalent in a relevant branch of biosciences is essential. Evidence of winning grants, significant research experience and an excellent record of research productivity including high-quality research publications is highly desirable. Evidence of giving invited lectures and receiving honorary positions or awards would be an advantage.
Candidates with evidence of experience and vision in management of research, ability to think and operate strategically, leadership qualities in a multi-disciplinary environment, excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with funding bodies/peer-review groups, and evidence of networking and influencing skills and the ability to build effective collaborative links, are especially encouraged to apply.
Abstract:
The Fellowship in Virus-Cell Interactions/Cell Biology will focus on the interactions between viral proteins and host proteins in natural host cells. Furthermore, the functional significance of these interactions will be determined in cell lines, primary cell populations directly ex-vivo and in vivo.
Description:
The responsibilities of the research Fellow include:
developing a world-class research portfolio on the cell biology and viral pathogenesis, in collaboration with others, establishing projects that both complement work being done elsewhere and make use of the unique resources of the Pirbright laboratory.
delivering against targets agreed with BBSRC/Defra as part of IAH Science Strategy and in accordance with IAE requirements
establishing collaborations with national and international research groups working on the biology of mammalian viruses.
interacting with staff within the IAH and outside for establishing research collaborations and securing additional grant funding.
managing a research group including all issues pertaining to health and safety, biosecurity and biosafety, home office license requirements, quality assurance, staff training, staff career development and supervision of PhD students
actively participating in the IAH-wide quality assurance system in conjunction with the Institute Quality Manager. Employees are also expected to safeguard their own health and safety and security by following IAH policies and all employees are responsible for the Health and Safety and security of staff under their management.
As the Institute is engaged in Research work on a number of virus diseases of livestock, several of which, in particular foot-and-mouth disease, are highly infectious to livestock, compliance with the Disease Security Regulations is an essential requirement of employment. The Employee must not live on any premises where poultry or any cloven hoofed animals are kept, such as cattle, sheep, pigs, goats or deer, and must not visit any premises where such animals are kept within three days of entering the restricted area of the laboratory, or within five days of entering the restricted animal accommodation.
The post is graded at Band E and is an indefinite contract; (funding is currently for 5 years, and reviewed after 3 years). Starting salary is £33,780 to £37,534 depending on qualifications and experience. On appointment, you are eligible to join the Research Council’s Pension Scheme. You have the choice of either:
· an attractive, index-linked defined benefit pension scheme that currently has a 3.5% member contribution rate. The bulk of the cost of this scheme is met by the employer: or
· a stakeholder pension with a contribution from the employer. Our basic contribution is based on your age, and we pay this regardless of whether you

choose to contribute anything. You do not have to contribute if you do not wish to but, if you do, we will also match your contributions up to an additional 3% of pay.
Annual leave is 27 days on appointment plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays. The Institute has a subsidised child care scheme, staff restaurant and free parking. Staff work a 37 hour week, Monday to Friday.
