Two Ph.D. Research Fellowships

Organization: University of Bergen, Faculty of Humanities/Department of Foreign Languages

Location: Bergen, Norway

Field: Literature

Requirements:

Applicants must have completed a Master’s degree or equivalent by the application deadline. Candidates who have not completed their Master’s degree at the time of application will not be considered.

Abstract:

Two Ph.D. fellowships are available at the Department of Foreign Languages from 1 August 2011. The positions are connected to the research project Modernism and Christianity.

Description:

Applications must be written in English and the successful candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills in this language (to be tested by the texts submitted as well as by interview of shortlisted candidates). The proposed dissertation project must fall within the general field of British and Irish Literature and Culture, and also within the more specific area of study described in the Academic Guidelines for PhD Applicants:

Provided these requirements are met, however, applicants with an educational background from other relevant fields (such as Theology, Religious Studies, Philosophy, History or Comparative Literature) will also be considered.
Appointment to a research fellowship is normally for a period of four years. The research fellow must take part in the University's doctoral program and conduct his/her own research within a time frame of three years, while the fourth year is dedicated to teaching and/or other obligations.

The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen, and conform to the regulations that apply to the position. The Modernism and Christianity project encourages a cooperative spirit, and the fellows will be expected to contribute to the overall aims of the project through their research and the open exchange of information and ideas with other project members. The research fellows are also expected to carry out substantial archival research in relevant archive deposits: the attached research schedule should include reference to such plans.

The salary will be in accordance with level 48 (code 1017/20.8) on the Norwegian government salary scale (currently NOK 383.700,- gross p.a. following ordinary meriting regulations). A compulsory 2% contribution to the State Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse) will be deducted from gross salary.

Further information about the fellowship can be obtained from the Research Director of the Modernism and Christianity project, Dr Erik Tonning, phone (0047) 55 58 28 60, e-mail: erik.tonning@if.uib.no, or, for questions concerning application procedures, from the department’s research officer, Jan A.
