Abstract:
The Department of Biology (BIO – www.uib.no/bio) has a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow in tropical ecology and biogeography affiliated to the Ecological and Environmental Change Research Group
Description:
THE MATRIX project investigates the relationship between species-richness, forest fragment size and the properties of the intervening non-forest matrix in Ugandan evergreen forests. We use several species groups (birds, bats, ferns, butterflies) to evaluate the conservation value of different forests and of different land-use types in the agricultural matrix landscapes. We collaborate with the Law Faculty at UiB and Makerere University to investigate the effectiveness of different legal frameworks for maintaining forest ecosystem services and biodiversity.
The postdoctoral fellow will participate in field work in Uganda, but the main focus of the fellow’s own research will be on data analysis and synthesis. The fellow will be part of a cross-disciplinary research team involving taxonomists, biogeographers, lawyers and nature conservation organisations in Uganda and Norway who will ensure that the results can contribute to the conservation of forests and wildlife in Uganda (see www.uib.no/rg/EECRG/projects/the-matrix for further details on the project).
A project plan and a progress plan will be written in cooperation with the research group on appointment. It is a premise that the selected candidate will complete the project within the stipulated period of employment. The project proposal and progress plan shall (sic: form part of) be annexed to the employment contract, and shall include the name of the person who is to be the discipline advisor for the selected candidate.
The teaching language will normally be Norwegian and English.
