Description:
The Scientific Computing and Control Theory group, MAC2, at CWI has an open position for a PhD student to work in a project on quantitative image reconstruction in tomography. Tomography is an image reconstruction technique that leans strongly on large-scale numerical mathematics, particularly linear algebra. It has a wide range of applications in medicine (CT-scans), industry (nondestructive testing) and science (3D imaging of nanomaterials). This project focuses on the development of new computational techniques for incorporating parameter estimation within the image reconstruction algorithms. This new subfield in tomography offers the potential of much more accurate reconstruction than conventional techniques, while at the same time imposing major computational challenges. Large scale scientific computing on supercomputer clusters, as well as GPU computing will be employed. Although the problem setting is motivated by the imaging applications, the techniques developed in this project will be extended to more general inverse problems as well. The general theme of this project is fixed, but the plan of work is highly flexible and will be adjusted to the candidate’s expertise and interests.
