Description:
The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney is the largest health science faculty in Australia and is internationally recognised for quality and innovation in teaching and research.
The Faculty’s Exercise, Health and Performance Research Group studies the effect of exercise on the human body from birth to the old age. The Group focuses on two seemingly contrasting dimensions of exercise. One is how exercise can help people recover from injury and improve the well being of people with chronic conditions. The other looks at maximising the performance of humans in a range of domains, such as sport, medicine and law enforcement.
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, dedicated early career researcher to work under the guidance of Professor Mark Williams as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The work of Professor Williams is grounded in the areas of motor behaviour, motor control and learning and applied cognitive psychology focusing on identifying the mechanisms underpinning expertise and how these are acquired through practice and instruction.
You will have the opportunity to contribute to the research profile of the group and assist Professor Williams in the day to day coordination of his research program. This will include literature review, assistance with data collection and analyses, contribution to publications and grant submissions, and project management. There may also be opportunities to assist with postgraduate student supervision.
To succeed you will have a PhD in a relevant discipline strongly related to the areas of motor behaviour, motor control and learning, cognitive science, experimental psychology and/or behavioural neuroscience. Previous experience with techniques for analysis of expert performance and skill learning is essential as is your ability to produce high quality peer-reviewed publications and to contribute positively to the group’s research program.
A strong knowledge of research methods and statistics would be highly regarded. Previous programming experience, ideally in MATLAB, Labview or E-Prime would be advantageous as would experience with methods used to record eye movements and movement kinematics.
Excellent time management and organisational skills will be necessary as will good communications skills and an ability to work well independently and within collaborative research networks.
