PhD: Photovoltaic Products for Indoor Use
Organization: Delft University of Technology
Location: Delft, Netherlands
Field: Engineering
Requirements:
The candidate should have an MSc degree in Industrial Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a similar field, with strong and proven interest in sustainable energy. Preferably, the candidate has practical experience with both experimental research and product design and engineering.
Abstract:
Photovoltaic (PV) solar energy conversions could contribute to the development of autonomous sustainable products that can be ubiquitously used indoors at low cost.
Description:
Photovoltaic (PV) solar energy conversions could contribute to the development of autonomous sustainable products that can be ubiquitously used indoors at low cost. Despite these assumed advantages, the research field of indoor product-integrated PV has emerged only recently, and many relevant issues have not been addressed thoroughly. For instance, efficient energy harvesting of low irradiance energy, power management of product-integrated PV in relation to user behaviour and in different environments of use, and manufacturing need more research. In this PhD project, therefore, we aim at a better understanding of the relations between low irradiance and photovoltaic materials for energy conversions, taking into account new developments in polymer solar cells and plastic electronics, CIS and advanced GaAs materials. This information will be used to develop (affordable) products with different functionality and experience. As an example, in the very low power range, sensors and applications in e-textiles seem to be feasible; at medium power windows, consumer electronics and lamps could be of interest for integrated PV energy conversions.
This PhD project aims to experimentally evaluate the characteristics of indoor irradiance energy, to define the features of PV materials that would suit the built environment and to design and develop demonstrators of innovative products with integrated PV for indoor use.
The succesful candidate will get a temporary 1 year contract, with a possibility for a 4 year contract.
