Postdoc in physical oceanography
Organization: Universitetet i Bergen
Location: Bergen, Norway
Field: physical oceanography
Requirements:
Applicants must have achieved a Norwegian doctorate in physical oceanography, physics, applied mathematics or related disciplines, or must have achieved equivalent education abroad, or have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for applications. It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted.
Scientific requirements for the position is a thorough understanding of ocean mixing processes, a good relevant publication record, experience in microstructure measurement systems and turbulence data processing, strong programming skills, in particular in Matlab, experience in data analysis, and experience in design, planning and organization of field campaigns. Experience with glider deployment and glider data analysis is an asset.
The applicant must be fluent in English with very good writing skills.
Abstract:
The Geophysical Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in physical oceanography to work with the “Faroe Bank Channel Overflow: Dynamics and Mixing” project.
Description:
The successful candidate will investigate the role of internal waves, mesoscale eddies, and transverse circulation on entrainment and mixing of the dense overflow plume downstream of the Faroe Bank Channel. The research will be based on observations from a ship survey, underwater gliders, and moored instruments. The candidate will participate in a research cruise and conduct dedicated oceanic measurements. In addition to the deployment of common modern shipboard and moored oceanographic instrumentation, microstructure measurement systems will be utilized. A glider equipped with microstructure sensors will sample for the cruise duration, supplementing the profiles from a shipboard vertical microstructure profiler. A moored buoy equipped with microstructure sensors will sample long term time series at the turbulent overflow plume interface. This data set will be supplemented by the year-long record from mooring arrays and a glide.
A project plan and a progress plan will be written in cooperation with the project supervisor on appointment. It is a premise that the selected candidate will complete the project within the stipulated period of employment. The project proposal and progress plan shall (sic: form part of) be annexed to the employment contract, and shall include the name of the person who is to be the discipline advisor for the selected candidate.
Starting salary on grade 57 (code 1352/pay framework 24.1) in the Civil Service pay grade table, currently NOK 448,400 gross p.a.; following ordinary meriting regulations (wage range 57–64). In the case of particularly highly qualified applicants a higher salary may be considered.
