Early Stage Researcher: Glass and Ceramic Composites for High Technology Applications
Organization: Università degli Studi di Padova, Department of Mechanical Engineering
Location: Padova, Italy
Field: Materials Engineering
Requirements:
Master degree in Materials Science & Engineering, or Chemistry
Abstract:
Vitrification of waste and reuse of the obtained glasses as raw materials for the manufacturing of building materials with improved properties (porous and dense glass-ceramics, traditional ceramic tiles with new formulations)
Description:
The aim of this project is to offer a multidisciplinary training in the field of high-tech glasses and composites, in tight contact with companies and universities within this consortium. Our scientific goals are to develop advanced knowledge on glass based materials and to develop innovative, cost-competitive, and environmentally acceptable materials and processing technologies. The inter/multi-disciplinary characteristic is guaranteed by the presence, within this consortium, of five academic partners and five companies, from six countries, having top class expertise in glass science and technology, modelling, design, characterization and commercialization of glass and composite based products.
The research carried out at the University of Padova research unit will essentially concern waste management, i.e. vitrification and reuse of several types of waste. Municipal waste incinerator bottom ashes, mining residues, contaminated sediments, air pollution control residues etc. (and combinations among them) will be converted into glasses, to be reused as
raw materials for the manufacturing of building materials with improved properties
(production of sintered - monolithic or cellular - glass-ceramics, or modification of traditional
ceramic tiles), or as new sustainable building materials (e.g. lightweight aggregates), special cement production and filling of bituminous agglomerates.
