Project: Old age comes with changes in patterns of sleep, e.g. increased awakenings. The circadian rhythm also changes as older people wake earlier. Although sleep and rhythm disturbances are ubiquitous symptoms of depression, it is unclear whether they precede the onset of depression or are mostly a symptom of the disease. To determine the causal relation of altered circadian rhythms and disturbed sleep with late life depression, we begin the following research project funded by ZonMw-VIDI: “When sleep and depression come of age”. Detailed actigraphic and ambulatory EEG measures are related to psychological and physical health as well as endocrine, immunological and atherosclerotic changes in the elderly. The sleep parameters are analysed in collaboration with the University of Chicago, several short stays in the US are planned. A detailed description of the project is available on http://www.erasmus-epidemiology.nl/organization/vacatures.php Job description You will be responsible for the conduct of the project and will analyze the data together with Ph.D. students and a multidisciplinary group of senior researchers. First, these analyses will focus on repeated questionnaire assessments of sleep quality, later actigraphy and EEG analyses will form the core of the research. International collaborations and replications are an integral part of the project. The results of the research are published in international journals. Depending on the qualifications of the candidate, NIHES courses in Epidemiology are offered.
 
Terms of employment We offer a position for 3.5 years. The gross monthly salary, dependent on education and experience, amounts to maximum € 3.860,- (scale 10) for a Ph.D. candidate based on a full workweek. The terms of employment are according to the CAO UMC.
