Abstract:
Applications are invited for the position of a Ph.D. student (or Dr. biol. hom.) to join the well-equipped Laboratory for Experimental Orthopaedics at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Giessen. The research group investigates the mechanobiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology of osteoarthritis.
Description:
The research project will focus on boundary lubrication by synovial fluid which refers to the ability of this joint fluid to reduce the friction between apposed and pressurized cartilage surfaces. Surface-active phospholipids (SAPL) significantly contribute to boundary lubrication, which, once impaired, will cause increased friction, and ultimately, greater cartilage damage within articular joints during osteoarthritis. We aim to study the regulatory control of SAPL-production using an in vitro model. The project will involve the use of mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS, MALDI-TOF), qRT-PCR, immunocytochemistry, Western blotting and/or ELISA.
