Abstract:

The VIB Department of Molecular Genetics is one of 8 research departments of VIB. With near 100 researchers working in 4 research groups, the department aims to understand the complex nature of neurological and psychiatric human diseases (http://www.molgen.ua.ac.be/). The department disposes over the expertise of centralized service facilities like the Genetic Service Facility and the Diagnostic Service Facility, as well as central units with expert knowledge in functional genomics, technology development and bio-informatics.

Description:

We have contributed to the identification of genes responsible for various types of inherited peripheral neuropathies. The identification of genes and disease-associated mutations is the first step in understanding the pathomechanisms, and opens new perspectives for molecular genetic diagnosis and therapy. Genotype/phenotype correlations guide the selection of specific mutations suitable for functional analysis in cellular systems and model organisms. We study the effect of mutations in small heat shock proteins on their biochemistry and expression in motor and sensory neurons. We developed mouse models with mutations in the small HSP genes. These models will need careful phenotyping and are to be used to study the disease mechanisms in several aspects. We offer an excellent multidisciplinary team-oriented research environment involving clinicians, geneticists, molecular biologists and bio-informaticians.
