2 PhD Positions at the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre

Organization: Belgian Nuclear Research Centre

Location: Mol, Belgium

Field: Science

Requirements:

We seek talented, innovative, and motivated young researchers with passion for science. For both subjects strong modelling skills are required, together with a sound background in either mineralogy, (geo)chemistry, applied mathematics, or physical transport processes. Programming skills (C++, matlab or similar) are strongly recommended. Research will be carried out in collaboration with the University of Ghent and TU Delft.
The applicants are required to send an abstract of ONE PAGE with their vision on coupling microstructural modelling to a geochemical model (PhD 1) or on respective multi-scale modelling (PhD 2) and the relation to the concrete durability. The applications without the abstract will not be considered.

Abstract:

Two closely related positions in the area of concrete degradation modelling are available

Description:

(1) TITLE: Microstructural modelling to relate transport properties to chemically and mechanically induced change in microstructure; The first subject will continue the development of an existing microstructural model for cement paste and will integrate chemical processes of cement degradation. Model parameterisation will be based on existing data from associated projects.

(2) TITLE: Multi-scale modelling of the coupled effects of chemical, mechanical and physical processes on concrete degradation; For subject two the principal objective is to develop a multi-scale modelling framework to incorporate the coupled effects of chemical, mechanical and physical processes on chemical degradation of concrete in order to assess the long-term, large-scale durability of concrete structures.
The team: Belgian nuclear research centre SCK•CEN is one of the largest research centres in Belgium. The environment is broadly international and the work will be carried out in the multidisciplinary expert group. We have international cooperation with several universities and research institutes.

What do we offer: The proposed PhD at our institute is an excellent career start (springboard to many applications in nuclear/non-nuclear sector). We support and help with publishing in international journals, e.g. course of scientific writing and give possibilities for attendance of “top” conferences. Special budget is foreseen for additional education e.g. summer schools. We have possibilities for accommodation in research campus, and finally we offer motivating environment.
