PhD The movement of leukocytes during immune and inflammatory responses
Organization: University of Glasgow
Location: Glasgow, Scotland
Field: Neurosciences - Neurobiology
Requirements:
The studentship will be of interest to honours graduates in immunology, neuroscience or related disciplines Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, at least an upper second class honours degree or equivalent in immunology, neuroscience or related disciplines.
Abstract:
We have received funding from the Sackler Foundation for a 3 year studentship to investigate what mechanisms link peripheral inflammation to inflammatory responses in the brain.
Description:
The movement of leukocytes during immune and inflammatory responses is a carefully orchestrated process that ensures coordinated cellular migration in response to physiological and pathological cues. Our interest in this area has been prompted by the repeated observations of a link between chronic inflammatory pathologies, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and depressive illness.
We have received funding from the Sackler Foundation for a 3 year studentship to investigate what mechanisms link peripheral inflammation to inflammatory responses in the brain.
Students will be based within the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation http://www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/iii/ which brings together world-leading basic, applied, clinical and translational researchers to study infection, with a focus on the viral, parasitic and bacterial pathogens of both humans and animals; and immunology and inflammation, with a focus on chronic inflammatory diseases.
You will be jointly supervised by Prof Gerry Graham who leads one of Europe’s largest chemokine research groups and by Dr Jonathan Cavanagh, a clinical academic who leads a research group focused on the relationship between inflammatory disease and its impact on the brain in terms of neuropsychiatric disorders.
This studentship carries a stipend of £13,590. The intended start date is October 2011.
Our Institute brings together world-leading basic, applied, clinical and translational researchers to study:
infection, with a focus on the viral, parasitic and bacterial pathogens of both humans and animals; and
immunology and inflammation, with a focus on chronic inflammatory diseases.
Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world. Today we are a broad-based, research intensive institution with a global reach.
