PhD Studentship - Molecular basis of herbivore resistance in Brassica napus

Organization: University of Glasgow

Location: Glasgow, Scotland

Field: Environmental science

Abstract:

The purpose of the research is to facilitate the development of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) varieties with increased resistance to herbivorous insect pests and which can therefore be grown with reduced pesticide inputs.

Description:

The purpose of the research is to facilitate the development of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) varieties with increased resistance to herbivorous insect pests and which can therefore be grown with reduced pesticide inputs. To achieve this goal it is important to have a detailed knowledge of the molecular and biochemical basis of herbivore resistance. It is well known that herbivore attack stimulates the expression of genes that are involved in deterring feeding. The aim of this project is to identify regulators of the transcriptional responses involved in resistance to insect herbivory.

This project will provide excellent training in contemporary research skills and methods, including the analysis of transcriptome profiles and studies of gene function. This Studentship is funded by the BBSRC Crop Improvement Research Club and is supervised by Professor Gareth I. Jenkins. The proposed starting date is 1 October 2011. The Institute of Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology (http://www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/biology/) has excellent facilities for research and provides an outstanding environment for PhD student training.

Further information can be obtained from Gareth.Jenkins@Glasgow.ac.uk, to whom applications, including a CV and the names of two academic referees, should be submitted by 21 June.
